Lesson 2: Make a treasure Chest
Vocab Taught: Treasure, treasure chest, gold, island.
Phonics taught: g-o-l-d
Preparation: Flashcards, Shoebox; 1 for every five students, Coloured paper or paint, Card, Coloured pens, Tin foil, Glitter, Safety scissors
Time: About an hour, depending on class size.
Warmer + Review - Run & Slap: Get two or three students up at a time. Give them an item of vocab, for example: It's a parrot. The students race to get the correct flashcard. Make sure that they say the vocab when they pick up the flashcard. 5-7 minutes.
Introduce and drill the new vocab; be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.
Follow-up with a game of Whispers. 10 minutes.

Demonstrate in front of the class how to make the treasure chest.
Split the class into groups of 5 or so. Get them to decorate their treasure chests. 25 minutes. We will use the treasure chests in the next lesson, so be sure that they stay in the classroom!
Teach the phonic values of the four letters. Play target throwing by writing the letters on the board and throwing a ball at whichever letter you (or a student elected as the teacher) say. Make sure they students say the letters and their phonic values when they hit each letter.
