ESL Activity: Machine
A great team game for more advanced ESL students.
How to play: Organise students in groups of 4 or 5. Either give each group a machine that they have to imitate or let them come up with their own. Explain to the students that they must "break-down" their machine into smaller functions. Each member of the group must take on the role of one of the machines functions. The group must then charade the machine to the class who has to guess what their machine is.
Here is an example for a printer:
1) Paper 2) Rollers 3) Ink 4) The part that moves the ink into position ("Ink mover")
Students stand in a line. 1) The roller takes the paper and slowly feeds it towards the ink. 2) When the paper gets to the ink the "ink mover" moves the ink around the paper. 3) The paper now reaches the end of the line with "writing" on it.
This is a fun and challenging exercise for adult and advanced ESL students. Enjoy!
